AUG 28, 2013 – JTMP is all about music and activism, and we recognize how important the role music played in the March on Washington 50 years ago. One of the most well-known musical events was Peter, Paul and Mary singing their great folk activist protest songs; watch "If I Had a Hammer" below. Many great musicians were on hand that day such as the legendary and great gospel singer Mahalia Jackson who goaded Martin Luther King Jr. into deviating from his prepared text at the March on Washington 50 years ago saying, "Tell them about the dream Martin!", setting up the historic moment. Other musicians present were Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Activist Dick Gregory later complained there were too many white musicians, and wished there was more diversity in the lineup. Nevertheless, music played as a soundtrack to history, and check out 8 great songs tied to the march from Mahalia Jackson to Odetta on here.
