JULY 14, 2014 – Junior Appalachian Musicians, Inc. (or “JAMinc“) is a non-profit with a mission to help as many children as possible to have access to the joy of participation in the music of their rich Appalachian heritage. JAMinc does this by providing the traditional instruments of Appalachia, such as the guitar, mandolin, banjo, and more. JAMinc provides lessons and instructions to kids interested in learning these instruments, augmented by dance and vocal instruction, and they also have visiting artists to help keep the tradition of Appalachian music alive for future generations. They go on tour with the kids frequently, and JAMinc drove up to the DC area today and were featured on listener-supported WAMU BluegrassCountry.org live on the air. JAMinc has also launched a “School Outreach” campaign, bringing in music from all corners of the world to the Richmond, Virginia area to expose K-12 students to traditional music from a variety of cultures.  JTMP strongly supports arts & music in the schools, and we urge our supporters to tell your elected representative to increase funding for the arts in schools. Read more about JAMinc on their website here, and watch a video about JAMinc from VOA below. Also, a project called “Close Kin: Our Roots Run Deep” was launched to record performances from these children that benefited from JAMinc’s work. Watch a video of some of that below.
