MAY 8, 2012 - The war on poverty, known to most Americans as the "war on drugs", almost killed a young law student at UC San Diego, when he was arrested by police and put handcuffed in a windowless cell and forgotten for 5 days, with no food or water. On April 20, 2012 Daniel Chong went to one of the many annual 4/20 counterculture parties across America, but was swept up in a police raid the next morning and forgotten about when he was put into a holding cell. Daniel said later, "I didn't care if I lived or died, I was completely insane.", and even ate one of his eyeglass lenses to try and commit suicide. JTMP supports the ending of the insane war on drugs, and urges our supporters to sign the petition over at Just Say Now calling for the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate the DEA's abuse of Daniel Chong. President Obama and the White House have set up on their website where Americans can directly petition the President and give us a "voice in our government", and an American citizen has started a petition to legalize marijuana on it, and you can check it out here.
APR 20, 2012 - Ted Nugent is in the news again, this time for shooting off his arrow rather than his mouth. In 2009 when he was filming his "Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild" show for the Outdoor Channel, he shot an arrow and wounded a bear, and didn't chase down the bear and assure the kill; which is very unethical to many hunters. He is entering a plea agreement with the Alaskan authorities, which reads that Nugent "failed to locate and harvest the wounded black bear". 4 days later Ted shot and killed a different black bear, and transported it off Alaska's Sukkwan Island. The problem is Alaska's bear season limit is 1, and the first bear Nugent shot is considered his first kill. Under a plea agreement he will plead guilty to one count of transporting an illegally hunted bear.
"Uncle Ted" won't get any jail time, but he will have to do Public Service Announcement videos for a year emphasizing the importance of hunters being familiar with the regulations in the areas they hunt (can't wait to see those). He will face a hefty fine ($10,000), be on probation for 2 years, and no hunting in Alaskan or US Forest Service lands for those 2 years. Ouch. Oh, and he got caught by the Lacey Act, which should drive conservatives crazy. They have been upset at that law since the Gibson Guitar plants were "raided" in 2011 by Federal officials for alleged illegally harvested wood from Madagascar. APR 20, 2012 - The youth vote is crucial for Obama in his bid for reelection, so the President has commenced a tour of key states pushing for Congress to extend the lower interest rates on student loans. The 3 state tour, through North Carolina, Colorado and Iowa will be aimed at young people who lately have been strapped with student debt once they leave college. If Congress doesn't act, rates will double after July 1 to 6.8%. Read more on Reuters.com here. (photo credit: graciepoo/Flickr)
APR 10, 2012 - The Red Hot Chili Peppers are in Cleveland to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and have decided to give a free concert to the volunteers over at the Cleveland Obama/Biden 2012 campaign headquarters who have been hard at work knocking on doors and making phone calls making sure people are registered to vote and getting out to vote. The concert will be this Sunday at the Cleveland's House of Blues, and if you live in the Cleveland area and want to volunteer your time and maybe snag you some tickets to the show, check out the Obama 2012 Event Page here. FEB 22, 2012 - President Barack Obama hosted a blues concert at the White House last night with BB King, Mick Jagger, Buddy Guy and more, and at the end when he was telling everyone goodnight, Buddy Guy told the President, "We were trying to get you to help us sing! Because I heard you singing Al Green, so you done started something, you gotta keep it up now!" Then Mick Jagger offered his mike to Obama. The crowd chanted, "Sing! sing!"
President Obama was hesitant at first, but ended up singing a few lines of the blues classic "Sweet Home Chicago", and just like the Al Green song he sang awhile back, he nailed it. Watch the performance below. The show will air on PBS on February 27, find and check your local PBS listings here.
