CSM Miriam Makeba The fame and exile of Mama Africa
MAR 11, 2013 - The Christian Science Monitor has a great article out about the musical activist Miriam Makeba from South Africa. Makeba took a stand against segregation and apartheid, and was exiled by her home country, even turned away at the airport and not allowed to attend her mother's funeral. Google dedicated their page back on March, 4th to honor her and her work. Read more on Christian Science Monitor here.
Australian Musical Activist Tim Levinson The best music is written to conviction
MAR 8, 2013 - I came across this article about Australian activist musician Tim Levinson on the Sydney Morning Herald website. Here is an excerpt and link to full article below, check him out!
From Sydney Morning Herald:
"Contrary to all the misconceptions about rap and social activism, Levinson's drive comes not from anger but from empathy. His mother worked for years in Kings Cross with homeless children - ''always charitably minded, not charity minded'' - and brought up three children on her own after Levinson's father, a former pilot, left when Levinson was 10. This middle child was acutely aware of what his mother was going through.
''My mum became this workaholic in order to keep payments on the house maintained,'' he says."

New York State Assembly votes to block fracking until 2015
MAR 7, 2013 - The New York State Assembly has banned the practice of fracking for 5 years, which is a good victory for the anti-fracking activist community, but does show we need to keep the fight up until we have a permanent ban. (photo credit: Leeseann/Flickr/CC)
Alvin Lee from Ten Years After Dies
MAR 6, 2013 - JTMP has sad news to report. Alvin Lee, one of the best guitarists and an artist that had a huge impact on the 1960's music scene has passed away. On his website his family announced the sudden death of this great musician after a routine surgical procedure. He is best known for "I'm Going Home", that has one of the best electric guitar lead solos ever, and the awesome song, "I'd Love to Change the World"; which JTMP did a cover version of back in 2009. Artists Against Fracking Start Anti-Fracking Billboard Campaign
MAR 6, 2013 - Artists Against Fracking, a collection of activist musicians consisting of Yoko and Sean Lennon, Justice Through Music, and many other artists and organizations, have started a billboard campaign pushing for New York Governor Mario Cuomo to ban the harmful practice of fracking permanently statewide. Sean Lennon issued a statement saying, "Fracking for gas is inherently dirty and dangerous. Cement and pipes at these great depths are simply not reliable, as the industry’s own documents show. Cracks and leaks will inevitably poison wells and aquifers. Rural communities will be turned into industrial brownfields. No amount of regulation can make fracking safe." Check out their campaign and get more info on their website below. (Photo credit: artistsagainstfracking.org)
