FEB 19, 2015 – Pussy Riot, the art-activist-rock collective or “band” from Russia that is constantly protesting Putin and his regime, and constantly getting hassled, beaten, arrested and even jailed for it, have released their first English speaking song called “I Can’t Breathe” inspired by Eric Garner being strangled by police in New York last year for selling a cigarette on the sidewalk telling the cops, “I can’t breathe!” the whole time. This is the first time Pussy Riot has really dabbled into American politics, and it will be interesting to see if the women start expanding into politics beyond Russia even more. Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina talked with Luke Harding and Peter Verzilov of The Guardian and said the song was also about Russia too. In the video there is a brand of cigarettes that was created by a supporter of Putin’s actions in Crimea and Ukraine, and is part of Putin’s propaganda machine of a “Russian Spring”. Pussy Riot says, “Since last spring we [Russia] have been living in a condition of war and hatred towards the rest of the world that the Kremlin has called ‘the Russian Spring’ following the annexation of Crimea.” Read the interview of Nadya and Masha on The Guradian.com here.

On the band’s YouTube Channel the band talks about the song and video saying, “Pussy Riot’s first song in English is dedicated to Eric Garner and the words he repeated eleven times before his death. This song is for Eric and for all those from Russia to America and around the globe who suffer from state terror – killed, choked, perished because of war and state sponsored violence of all kinds – for political prisoners and those on the streets fighting for change. We stand in solidarity. “ Watch the graphic and strong video from Pussy Riot featuring their new song, “I Can’t Breathe” below.
