PRESS RELEASE: Justice Through Music Calls On Iran To Release American Hikers
Iran Using Hikers As Political Pawns
09.18.2011– Washington, DC -- On September 14, 2011, Justice Through Music, www.jtmp.org, a national non profit that supports political prisoners worldwide, wrote a letter to Iranian President Ahmadinejad calling for the immediate release of American hikers Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal who have been held in Iranian prison for more than two years. Last month, the two were convicted and sentenced to eight year terms for supposedly straying into Iranian territory while hiking in the mountains surrounding Iran.
"Iran has used Shane and Josh as political pawns for its own propaganda purposes for more than two years, causing grievous suffering to them and their families," said JTM Director Brett Kimberlin. "This comes after the brutal suppression of the Green Movement in Iran and the execution of women and gays for exercising their inalienable human rights to free expression. We call on Iran to release Shane and Josh without precondition and to join the civilized world in its treatment of fellow human beings."
Justice Through Music is a strong advocate for people of conscience and those being held in prison for exercising their rights under international law.
